From Slate to Story: A Creative Journey Through Time

Led by artist-in-residence Martin Matthews, this unique arts initiative invites participants to explore the transformation of reclaimed slate tiles from the original fever hospital on Wolfe Tone Street into powerful works of art. Through hands-on workshops, storytelling sessions, and a public exhibition, the project connects local history, personal expression, and traditional craftsmanship.

Participants—members of TASK Training & Support Kilkenny and Kilkenny Mental Health Community Services—will engage with the rich heritage of the site, creatively repurposing slate to reflect themes of recovery, resilience, and renewal. The final exhibition, held in the grounds of the Auxiliary Hospital during Mental Health Week 2025, will showcase these stone carvings and celebrate the building’s evolution from a 19th-century hospital to a modern centre for health and wellbeing.

This free public event will include open days and a family fun day in the Recovery Garden, offering a welcoming space for the community to connect, learn, and celebrate creativity. Supported by local organisations and widely promoted across Kilkenny and Carlow, the exhibition highlights the healing power of the arts and the importance of community in mental health.

Our 2 hour workshops will be invitation only to the service users and will be exhibited on site from the 6th to the 10th of October, 2025
