Hexed Horizons

Visual artist and teacher Declan Kelly is partnering with Boomerang Youth Services and the Drogheda Games Club (DGC) on Hexed Horizons—a creative project fusing art, gaming, and self-expression. The DGC includes 20–24 young people (ages 12–18), many of whom are neurodivergent and LGBTQI+, with a shared love for tabletop gaming, including wargames, RPGs, and terrain design.

At the heart of the project is the collaborative reimagining of Settlers of Catan into a large, sculptural, hex-based game board. Each participant will craft a 30cm tile, incorporating raised elements and personal themes to contribute to a dynamic, ever-evolving board. The process encourages creativity and world-building, with the game being entirely adapted and reimagined by the group.

Participants will explore Catan’s gameplay themes—such as resource management and settlement building—while building skills in sculpture, painting, and design. They’ll also use modern digital tools like 3D modelling, printing, and laser cutting to enhance their creations.

Sustainability is a key focus, with recycled and repurposed materials used throughout. The final product will be painted and varnished for durability, resulting in a unique, collaborative artwork that blends gaming, technology, and eco-conscious art making—empowering young people through creative collaboration.
