Honouring the tradition of thatched houses
Harvest Home, a short film documenting the art of thatching by local film maker/photographer, Padraic Seery funded by Creative Ireland Creative Communities in 2024 will be screened as part of a film showcase taking place at Offaly Historical Society, Bury Quay, Tullamore from 7pm on Monday, June 9th. Other films shown include God in a Bottle which delves into the tradition of two God in a Bottle makers in Offaly and the homes where God in a Bottle takes pride of place. The third film of the evening is Irish Folk Furniture which is a warm and witty film which follows the restoration of traditional Irish furniture. Also included for the evening will be a 'show and tell' from thatchers, Ben & Tony Purcell (who are featured in Harvest Home) who will introduce some of the hand tools used for thatching. Tony Donoghue & Sean Gleeson will also participate in a 'show and tell' and will present a number of small items that one might expect to find in a vernacular or thatched house.
