Nomadic Patchwork & Nomadic Library
Galway Traveller Movement (GTM) is committed to promoting Traveller culture and heritage through the arts. In this proposal, we are seeking to strengthen our community arts programme with two new collaborative projects. These will be developed throughout 2024 and showcased at this year's Misleór Festival of Nomadic Cultures.
NOMADIC PATCHWORK
A cross-cultural collaborative community project led by a group of textile artists. In the spirit of recycling, creative activism and cultural connection, textile artists will work with members of the local Traveller community to create a ‘patchwork of nomadic cultures’. The patchwork will be designed and created in a series of community workshops in Galway city (July-September), then completed and exhibited to the public in Nun's Island Theatre during Misleór Festival (26-28 September, 2024).
NOMADIC LIBRARY - embedding nomadic culture in architecture and the arts
A participatory workshop facilitated by Sámi artist and architect Joar Nango. In the tradition of ‘show-and-tell’, members of Traveller and nomadic communities will be asked to bring items, both old and new, which deeply connect to their culture and identity. These items will be used as talking points; to open up conversations about nomadic culture and identity.
Misleór is a Traveller-led community festival presented by GTM, which celebrates and connects nomadic peoples from around the world.
