Oldcastle - Our Town, Our Heritage, Our History

Oldcastle Community Development Association will be holding talks, exhibitions and workshops in August to gather and share information and memories about the history and heritage of Oldcastle.

Theses events will take place in one of the most historic former retail premises in the town. Formerly Mullen’s Auctions, owned and run by the late Michael Mullen, the building was first opened as a retail outlet by Michael's father on Easter Monday 1916,  one of the most significant dates in our State’s history.

The building will be open to the public all week with exhibitions on the Loughcrew Cairns, Laurence Gilson and the Gilson Endowed Schools, people from the area including Kathleen McKenna, Bishop Thomas Nulty and St. Oliver Plunkett and old businesses of the town.  There will also be talks, gatherings and workshops throughout the week.

Workshops will be led on tracing your family tree, how to record the history and heritage of an area e.g. recording gravestone inscriptions and discovering heritage through art, song and story-telling as a means of passing history to younger generations.

Talks will be given on a variety of topics including our local natural heritage and biodiversity, Cumann na mBan in north-west Meath, local folklore and traditions as recorded in the Schools Collection of the 1930’s and Oldcastle Rural District Council 1899-1925.

Please note that the details of events listed above are provided by the relevant Local Authorities.
