This community photography project explores the themes of refuge and identity for Ukrainian women currently living in Birr. The project draws a powerful parallel between the contemporary lived experiences of these women and Cáin Adomnáin (the Law of the Innocents).
Enacted in Birr in 697 AD, Cáin Adomnáin was Western Europe’s first legal framework protecting women, children and non-combatants during times of conflict. By linking this ancient ethical legacy to the present, the project positions the participants as modern bearers of a long-standing tradition of sanctuary.
Over eight weeks, participants use smartphone photography to document the people, places, and objects in Birr that evoke feelings of protection, joy, and belonging. The final work will be exhibited during Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival 2026.
