The Kicking Stone
Tramore Development Trust’s (TDT) Our Town, Our Future survey conducted in 2023/2024, determined that residents would like more resources and amenities for the community and opportunities to reconnect and engage with one another in order to develop a greater ‘sense’ of Tramore. As our core responsibility is to be a strong cultural resource for Tramore Town, TDT proposes to respond to these needs through innovative and imaginative projects that build a strong sense of place for residents and visitors alike.
Landmarks hold cultural and historical significance, and contribute to the identity of an area or place. Building on our work already started with two important Tramore landmarks (The Seahorse Tablet on the Doneraile Walk and the Haunted Well on the Pier Hill), TDT now proposes to install a ‘Kicking Stone’ situated at the end of the prom.
A small, designed structure, the Kicking Stone would be a reference point for users of the prom, inviting walkers to kick it, marking their turn or passing of it with a physical action. This physical action provides some satisfaction for those who chose to kick it, a playful way to denote the completion of a distance. Additionally, the kicking stone would become a local landmark, entering into the symbolic reference points for locals, and becoming a remarkable object for tourists.
With a design by sculptor James Horan http://www.jameshoransculpture.com, the Kicking Stone will be interactive, fun and engaging.
