The Straw Masquerade / Céilí na Tuí
Sunday, October 19th, as the Celtic year turns at Samhain, Clare invites you to celebrate its rich strawing traditions in a lively community céilí.
Rooted in age-old customs of disguise, music, dance, and storytelling, the event welcomes all ages to step into the playful world of the mummers or straw boys.
In the weeks before, artist Maeve Collins will lead workshops teaching participants to craft traditional straw costumes and hats using locally grown and prepared straw. For those joining on the night, hats and costumes will be provided, or you can bring your own.
The evening features live traditional music, dancing for every level, and guidance from dance teacher Louise O’Connor. This is more than a dance—it’s a revival of customs that marked the turning of the year, honouring ancestral creativity, resilience, and joy. Step into costume, take to the floor, and celebrate the turning of the year in true Clare style!
