Through Our Eyes

This project emerges from a desire to empower Traveller youth through creative exploration. By focusing on nature photography—a practice that requires patience, mindfulness, and observation—the project will aim to build confidence, connection, and expression among participants.

Working alongside Tina Claffey, whose photographic work celebrates the often-overlooked magic of Ireland’s boglands and biodiversity, participants will learn to look closely at their surroundings. They will be encouraged to notice beauty in details others might miss: the patterns in bark, the curve of a leaf, the light through grasses, or the reflection of sky in puddles. For many, this may be the first time they view their local environment as something to engage with artistically.

By using mobile phones rather than traditional cameras, the project will make the creative process accessible, relevant, and immediate. This decision reflects a democratic philosophy of artmaking—one that says creativity belongs to everyone, regardless of background, budget, or prior experience. The message is simple but powerful: you do not need expensive equipment to have a vision worth sharing.

Exhibition will be on display in Birr Library and Esker Arts Centre, Tullamore
