Timelines: Healing, Renewal and Peace
The Timelines Tapestry Group consists of 8 Irish tapestry weavers, all living and working in 7 local authority areas. The group members include Muriel Beckett (Wicklow), Tish Canniffe (Co. Cork), Frances Crowe (Roscommon), Pascale De Coninck (Co. Cork), Lorna Donlon (Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown), Terry Dunne (Wexford), Catherine Ryan (Laois) and Heather Underwood (Cork City). In 2023 the 8 weaver came together in collaboration to design and weave a large scale tapestry around the loose thematic of healing, renewal and peace, drawing from their experiences of the Covid 19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.
Tapestry weaving has been part of cultural heritage all over the world going back to early times. This work continues that tradition, and this piece stands proudly within contemporary art leaving a legacy for the future. In 2024 the collaborative weaving of the Timelines Tapestry will reach completion, and a touring exhibition planned with a goal of informing and encouraging creative participation in the wider community. The exhibition will commence in Roscommon in September 2024.
The weavers will facilitate workshops in each exhibition location, designed to suit learners at all stages of their tapestry/weaving journey, using portable frame looms and a variety of suitable yarns. They will also give artists talks and gallery tours.
