Tóch | Dig Phase II
‘Tóch | Dig’ is a phased intergenerational community engagement project initiated by artists Pamela de Brí, Shane Hynan and Sheena Malone who are interested in working with communities of place and interest connected to bogs in north Kildare. The project explores the effects of climate change on communities past, present and future.
'Tóch I Dig' Phase I was firmly rooted in the bog’s past and focused on gathering an extensive oral history archive through engagement with peatland communities in North Kildare, now available at https://www.tochdig.com
Phase II will investigate the bog as an uncertain space in transition, its future use(s) overlapping with and indebted to its turf-cutting past through, including but not exclusively, placenames, mapping and folklore.
While maintaining connections with the turf-cutting community from Phase I, the artists invite contributions from those who are harvesting the bog in non-traditional ways, excavating it as a means of interdisciplinary, academic and scientific knowledge production. By using the oral history archive as a point of departure, they will engage local communities, groups and academics whose research explores aspects of the bog with the aim of mapping new pathways (figuratively and metaphorically) through the landscape, broadening the discussion on the value of our peatlands for current and future communities.
