Walking in the Shadows: A shadow puppetry film for National Famine Ways schools program

This project will create Walking in the Shadows, a new shadow‑puppetry film designed to support the National Famine Way’s Theatre in Education programme. Developed by Enchanted Croi Theatre, the film will help fourth- and fifth‑class students explore stories from Marita Conlon‑McKenna’s Shoe Stories and understand the Irish Famine in an age‑appropriate and engaging way.

The 7–15 minute film will be crafted using original shadow puppetry, storyboarded and created over a 10‑day period while the Theatre in Education programme is running. Students involved in the workshops will contribute voiceovers in Irish and assist with puppet manipulation, deepening their connection to the history and creative process. Local composer Bianca Fachel will provide sound design, and filmmaker Shuttermaniac Productions will collaborate on production and support student learning in filmmaking.

Before the commemorative walk along the Famine Trail in May, selected local schools will visit the National Famine Museum to help create and preview the film. A public screening for participating students, families and the community is planned for the Vaulted Stables at the Museum.

By using shadow puppetry a medium well‑suited to exploring themes of loss, resilience and memory—the project offers a powerful educational resource that will continue to be used as part of the National Famine Way.
