Water Guardians

Water Guardians is a creative and environmental project based in the Ballinamore area, beginning in September 2025. The project will explore the Yellow River through a mix of citizen science, environmental education, and artistic engagement. In Autumn 2025, Transition Year students and teacher Seamus Mullen will join Community Water Officer Luke Kenny and artist Kathryn Maguire on a site visit to the Yellow River.

A series of participatory workshops will follow, examining the river’s geology, geomorphology, biodiversity and environmental history. These sessions will deepen participants' understanding of and connection to the concept of Water Guardianship.

Luke Kenny (LAWPRO) will lead citizen science workshops, including water-sampling and biodiversity studies. Artist Kathryn Maguire will lead 10 creative workshops in the school, supported by guest scientists. With over 20 years' experience in arts education across museums, galleries and schools, Maguire brings a rich interdisciplinary approach. She holds Masters degrees from the RCA (London) and NCAD (Dublin), was recently featured in Visual Artists Newsletter and will present a solo show at Pallas Projects, Dublin, in September 2025.
