Glór Naomh Bríde’ sa Phobal - The Voice of St. Brigid in the Community
Through Creative Ireland Clare Project Awards, traditional singer and folklore collector, Rachel Uí Fhaoláin developed a traditional song, research and performance project in Co. Clare. Phase 1 of this project involved the re-energising of a traditional song from the older generation of singers and connecting it with place.
Rachel examined the song repertoire of the late Jamesie McCarthy (1898-1977), in The Carroll Mackenzie Collection. Rachel was particularly interested in the song ‘St. Brigid's Well’. Jamesie McCarthy, as the source singer was central to the project. Thanks to the support of Jim Carroll and Pat Mckenzie, Rachel created a sympathetic narrative film piece which tells the story of St. Brigid’s Well.

Phase 2 of this project resulted in the new publication 'Glór Naomh Bríde' (The Voice of St. Brigid), with the first print supplied to National Schools and Libraries in Co. Clare. The 1900s inspired songster contains Rachel's interpretation of four songs pertaining to St. Brigid; the ballad of St. Brigid's Well, a newly composed suantraí, and two songs re-energised from the songbooks of An tAthair Pádruig Breathnach (1904-1926). The songbook was launched in Miltown Malbay Library on February 22nd, 2025.
Rachel will continue her intergenerational work - ‘Glór Naomh Bríde’ sa Phobal, through the delivery of traditional music and song.
