As part of Heritage Week 2025, the Astronomical Observatories of Ireland (AOI) invite children aged 8 to 13, accompanied by an adult, to take part in Whirlpool Workshops — a free, hands-on creative experience celebrating Ireland’s rich astronomical heritage. 

Set in the inspiring grounds of Birr Castle Demesne, home to the historic Great Telescope, each workshop weaves together storytelling, space science, and the arts. Participants will explore the wonders of the universe through creative, space-themed activities linked to real astronomical research — and take their artwork home afterward. The AOI, a collective of historically significant observatory sites currently seeking UNESCO World Heritage status, is proud to offer these workshops as a way to connect young people with Ireland’s scientific and cultural legacy. 

This event is free of charge, with support from Offaly County Council’s Creative Ireland Programme. However, places are limited and booking is essential. Tickets are required for both children and accompanying adults.
