Trick of the Light

Trick of the Light is a community-focused initiative designed to bring light, creativity, and connection to Galway’s streets during the quieter post-Christmas period. Consultation and engagement has confirmed both the need and the enthusiasm for a project that offers meaningful engagement during a time of year often marked by isolation and low energy.

In partnership with local artists, animators, and dancers, diverse community groups will co-create a series of short animations. Over the course of the autumn and winter months, groups will engage in workshops to explore themes of community, wellbeing, connection, togetherness as well as local stories and personal histories.

Upon completion, these animations will then be projected onto selected buildings, culminating in a captivating light installation on Spanish Arch during the final week of December and the first week of January. Beyond adding visual excitement and extending visitor's dwell time in the city, Trick of the Light offers a beacon of brightness in early January, often a challenging period marked by post-holiday blues. By involving participants of all ages and backgrounds, this project fosters creativity, inclusion, and a sense of shared cultural identity.
