The Devil’s in the Dance Hall
The Devil’s in the Dance Hall is a new multidisciplinary work by Edwina Guckian, developed from her research into the role of women in dance, the influence of jazz, and the impact of the 1935 Dance Hall Act. This vibrant project unfolds through immersive community dance events and a year-long creative media campaign, bringing to life the voices of dancers, musicians, priests, and protestors through dance, theatre, and archival material.
Events will take place across Leitrim, including a crossroads dance in Effrinagh, a house dance in Drumkeeran, a night in Mohill Hall—the site of the 1934 Anti-Jazz Protest—and a grand jazz night in the iconic Ballroom of Romance, Glenfarne. Each event blends social dance with immersive theatre, featuring actors and dancers woven through the audience.
The project features a 9-piece traditional/jazz band led by Conor Caldwell and Stephen Doherty, 20 dancers from Áirc Damhsa, and swing dancers performing choreographed pieces. Playwright Vincent Woods collaborates on storytelling, while artist Jesse Smyth leads a bold, vintage-inspired media campaign echoing the language of the 1930s:
“The Devil’s in the Dance Hall – Giddy Girls Be Warned. Lipstick Banned!”
