The Sleeping Giant

The Sleeping Giant  project will engage children, families, and community groups across County Sligo in creating hundreds of hand‑made lanterns using recycled and biodegradable materials. Led by artist Tom Meskell, who has over 30 years of experience in spectacle and lantern‑based events, these workshops will culminate in the lanterns’ public presentation at Culture Night Late 2026, delivered with support from national and local partners.

Workshops will take place in primary schools, secondary schools, and community settings. Activities include teacher training, classroom lantern‑making, school visits, and stand‑alone community workshops.  The project aims to build environmental awareness, strengthen pride of place in rural areas, and create a reusable toolkit for future community events. Lanterns will be returned to participating groups after the showcase to support ongoing creative activity.
