Bog Experience

Through the project 'Bog Experience', visual artist Rosemarie Langtry will engage with and faciliate  participants who are service users at St. Hilda's Unit, Ferbane, Co. Offaly to gain first-hand educational experiences of bog habitats. Many of the participants have been to a bog, and this project will offer direct engagement with the flora, fauna, and ecological systems that make these landscapes nationally and internationally significant. Participants will gain insight into biodiversity, conservation, climate relevance, and the cultural importance of Ireland’s peatlands.

Following the visits, participants will take part in a structured creative response programme using four artistic approaches:

  • Botanical artwork inspired by observed plant species
  • Wildlife painting based on native animals
  • Preservation of permitted, naturally fallen plant materials in resin
  • Plaster casting of plant forms
This project combines environmental education with creative practice, fostering ecological awareness, observation skills, and artistic expression. The project will culminate in an exhibition showcasing participants’ work and highlighting the importance of bog conservation.
