Land Commission Cottages – Desktop Survey

Meath County Council proposes a research project to develop a comprehensive understanding of Land Commission cottages across County Meath. These modest rural dwellings, built as part of Ireland’s 20th‑century land reform programme, form an important but under‑documented part of the county’s architectural and social heritage. The project will be a desktop‑based study, drawing solely on documentary, cartographic, and digital sources, and will strengthen the Council’s evidence base for future conservation, planning, and policy work.

The commission will produce a full inventory and typology of Land Commission cottages, identifying their architectural characteristics, construction periods, and patterns of alteration. Using historic mapping, aerial photography, Land Commission records, NIAH entries, planning history, and publicly accessible datasets such as GeoHive and MyPlan.ie, the consultant will locate and map all surviving cottages. A GIS‑compatible dataset will be created, recording key attributes including coordinates, townland, typology, visible modifications, heritage status, and indicators of vacancy or risk.

The study will also provide an architectural and historical analysis of cottage types, describing typical forms, materials, and layouts, and outlining the development of Land Commission housing in Meath.
