‘The Studio’ at Beaufort House with artist Penelope Lacey
The Studio offers weekly sessions for residents over a 7 month period with artist Penelope Lacey. In collaboration with staff, residents are invited to attend in small groups or on a one-to one basis, supporting a natural and responsive creative environment. This flexible approach ensures participant-led accessibility and meaningful participation, where informal and spontaneous encounters are welcomed.
At the centre of the project is The Studio polytunnel, a space where residents, families, staff, and artist gather. Creative activities are key to this process, working with clay, plant materials, and repurposed objects. Residents are invited to create personal and symbolic forms that reflect identity, memory, comfort, and care. This offers alternative ways of communication and self-expression, particularly for those who may find verbal expression challenging. Meaning is often conveyed through gesture, making, and shared attention. Horticultural activities further support reflection, as planting and tending to growth introduces gentle parallels with childhood memories and cycles of life.
Building relationships gradually, the artist will facilitate five gatherings with family and friends within the project to enable alternative methods of exploration and conversations about care, choice, and end of life.
