The aim of the Kilkeary Community Sensory Garden project is to collaboratively imagine, design and create an inclusive, accessible and creative outdoor space on the grounds of Kilkeary N.S.- The area does not have a community centre so the school is the heart and primary gathering place of the community. This project seeks to transform part of the school grounds into a shared space that functions as a community meeting place, wellbeing space, outdoor classroom and creative hub.

The Kilkeary Tidy Towns co-ordinated a series of workshops with the school children from Feb - June 2026. Workshops included 1. discussion and design 2. Light, sound, forces 3. Music 4. Art 5. Biodiversity and Ecology of the community, this sensory garden provides a shared creative space that is equally accessible to children, families, older residents and the wider community.

July -Sept 2026 The construction phase takes place during the summer months and is community led involving local builders, the Parent’s Association, the Tidy Towns committee, Gurteen organic farm, parents and residents.

The sensory garden will leave a lasting legacy- a vibrant, welcoming sustainable space rooted in the school that anchors community life.
