The project aims to link local schools to the development of an Inishowen Heritage Trail. The Sliabh Sneacht Centre has received funding to develop and Inishowen Heritage Exhibition and we have exbibits around the High Crosses and Slab-Crosses in Inishowen. Thre are some of the oldest crosses in Europe. We are proposing to create a 16 foot high Stainless Steel High Cross with stained glass panels to be placed outside the Centre to promote the Inishowen Heritage Trail and Exhibition - employing a local professional artist to work with four local primary schools to explore art found in High Crosses and to design four distinct panels which will be used to create four stained glass panels to be incorporated into the new High Cross. The artist will prepare/deliver a series of 1.5 hour workshops(5)with each of the 4 schools. The workshops will look at the Art and Design of High Crosses in Ireland and Inishowen and the design and use of Stained Glass, followed by workshops designing a specific panel from each school which will later be created in Stained Glass and incorporated into the finished High Cross.
Participants and the wider community will develop a better sense of the importance of preserving/promoting local and national culture and heritage and will feel a more immediate connection & ownership of their own culture and heritage. This project will help to create a better understanding within the local community of the culture and heritage of Inishowen.
