A collaborative community adaptation of ‘Our Town’ by Thornton Wilder

The proposed new project will look at themes from ‘OUR TOWN’ by Thornton Wilder. We will adapt the play to look at our own town – our own community and explore the 3 themes of the play –DAILY LIFE, LOVE AND MARRIAGE and DEATH AND ETERNITY in dialogue with the wider community in Dundalk and County Louth. We shall integrate location filming, voice and sound recordings, reminiscence, art work and poetry created by the actors and people from schools and community groups. When the audience experience the play in performance they will do so as co -creators and collaborators and will witness and share in a play made about themselves, by themselves.

Both process and performance will engender a creative and reflective response to contemporary Irish life, seen from a composite of perspectives – from the eyes of youth and the elderly, from people with disabilities and people from all as many social/economic and ethnic groups as possible.

When performed in An Tain Arts Centre it will be SET in An Tain Arts Centre Dundalk and will hold a mirror up to its’ audience. When toured to other venues, (throughout the island of Ireland and hopefully in the UK) the piece will invite audiences to think more deeply about their own communities and challenge them to respond creatively. We will offer workshops and discussions that will share practice that might give them the confidence to start on their own journey in their own town.
