Athlone Sub Aqua Club 50 years

Athlone Sub-Aqua Club has been in existence since 1972 and is celebrating its 50th birthday next year. It has been the one of the most successful diving clubs in the country. Over the years the club has trained hundreds of divers and snorkelers and has many members.

Part of the 50 year celebrations is the intention to get members together to celebrate the history of the club from its inception to present day, putting together an archive of the club and sharing it with the town and castle. Over the years divers and snorkelers have found a vast array of historic artifacts of great cultural interest on the Shannon riverbed. Much to the clubs delight, some are now displayed in the National Museum, and some here in the Castle of Athlone .It has always been an honour and pleasure for the club to contribute to learning about their past and help build a better picture of their local heritage through their findings.

In “making memories” their plan is two- fold. Firstly, the intention is to engage with the community in displaying pictures of their historical findings to date, show people some of their vast array of underwater and on the water photos, and also share with them what they have done and continue to do as a club.

Secondly, it is important to celebrate the clubs personal memories with its members. As soon as it is possible, the hope is to hold a social evening to celebrate the memories they have made together as a club over the years.
