Athy Walled Town, Art Installation

Athy is a town on the banks of the river Barrow and has roots going back before recorded time.

Ciara and Marc have travelled to Waterford, Kilkenny and Dublin researching and noting how other Town art projects tell their stories, their histories.

Marc is an archaeologist and illustrator Ciara is a ceramic artist. They both have decided that this project is about narrating the story of the town of Athy, visually. From the prospective of Athy, as it was in the fifteenth century, a thriving inland port and walled town. Using no words just Illustrations, ceramic structures and audio. The story of “Athy Walled Town-the Bridge at Athy” has never explained in a visual way to the people of Athy.

The community of Athy deserve to know their heritage and the history that lies underfoot.

Having a daughter who is chronically dyslexic Ciara is very aware of the need to think outside the box when it comes to teaching and storytelling. Ciara has worked in Athy and surrounding areas with many locals and community groups, and is critically aware of the literacy difficulties in the area.

The initiative will be in the form of an art installation, held in the local Library (which sits on the banks of the river Barrow) or the grounds of Whites Castle, which is a huge point of reference in our exhibition.

The exhibition will run for a period of a week. Invitations will be sent to all the local schools, and community groups.

Details of exhibition will be advertised once confirmed.

Please note that the details of events listed above are provided by the relevant Local Authorities.
