“For older adults with dementia, participatory art can help improve cognitive functioning, communication, self-esteem, musical skills, pleasure, enjoyment of life, memory and creative thinking” Mental Health Foundation, 2011.
The experience of a dementia inclusive gallery tour is quite magical. Each person has a chance to voice their opinion on the work on display in front of them, what they see, what it makes them feel is expressed. Each participant is provided with the opportunity to contribute and hear from their fellow peers. It is an experience, where the participants have the opportunity to chat in a friendly, non- threatening environment.
Aims:
- To provide training for Mayo cultural venue managers and facilitators to deliver dementia inclusive gallery tours.
- To pilot dementia inclusive tours in Mayo cultural venues.
These tours are new to Mayo. The primary objective is to reduce the barriers experienced by people with dementia and their carers in accessing cultural organisations and to ensure that every aspect of their engagement with these organisations is sensitive to their needs.
