Ballybane Library Maker Space extension
The Creative Ireland-funded Maker Space in Galway City's Ballybane Library has become a victim of its own success, and due to its growing popularity needs to be expanded to accommodate the large number of local groups that use the space for creative activity.
The space is currently home to a huge and diverse range of community groups, including six different book clubs for local children, teens, and adults; a women’s craft group; Foróige Doughiska and After School Ballybane Art and Craft clubs; Lego workshops; Fusion Friday craft based programmes catering for both adults and children; whilst also hosting specialised projects such Aran stitching workshops and a Decade of Centenaries commemorative banner making project.
We have found that to encourage true collaboration our Maker Space is falling short and so have embarked on an ambitious project to extend our Maker Space so as to make it more user friendly. We propose a collaboration between the Library , the Transition Year class from Galway Community College, and CURAM which will culminate in a mosaic on one of the Maker Space walls.
We will also add a new collaborative table, which will allow greater flexibility for large group and individual work.
