Ballymahon Songbirds
Ballymahon Songbirds is a group of women mainly 55+ many of whom attend Ballymahon Family Resource Centre to access various supports and services. The wider benefits of singing in improving mental health and wellbeing is well recognised in many medical studies.
The main difference between this group and a regular choir is that the focus is less on the technical aspects of the voice and more on building enjoyment, boosting confidence, improving mood and creating a strong sense of community connection. The group have built a strong rapport, are starting to build a fine repertoire of popular songs and are looking forward to putting on a concert in Ballymahon Library for Bealtaine a national festival which celebrates creativity in older people.
We also plan to have a Xmas concert in the local Nursing home Thomond Lodge. Key to the success of the group is an experienced Director and we have been very fortunate to secure the services of Local choir director Angela Reynolds who has done a great job building up the confidence of the group, encouraging us to experience the many health and well being benefits of singing and performing. Having access to the wonderful facilities of Ballymahon Community Library and the support of the very helpful library staff has also been critical to the enjoyment and appreciation of the value of this initiative.
