Beyond the Blackwater
This project, titled Beyond the Blackwater, is a place-based photography and mixed media programme designed for members of the West Waterford community who are experiencing mental health challenges. The project will run over 10 weeks and will be led by artist Philip Cullen.
The sessions are designed to create a sense of mental and physical space, encouraging participants to connect with their personal experiences and the local landscape of West Waterford. Throughout the programme, Philip will guide participants through a creative process centred on hands-on experimentation, personal expression, and visual storytelling using photography alongside a range of mixed media techniques. Each session will encourage reflection, mindfulness, and collaboration, providing a supportive and safe environment in which participants can explore their creativity.
The project is deeply rooted in place, drawing inspiration from the landscapes, culture, and communities surrounding the Blackwater River. By fostering connections with both the natural environment and one another, Beyond the Blackwater aims to promote wellbeing, resilience, and social connection while building participants' confidence and creative skills. Combining photography with the exploration of other artforms.
