Buns and Brushes

Buns and Brushes, is an exploration of the living social history of local older citizens by engaging active retirees and older members of the community as participants in a project of social sharing, creativity and intergenerational engagement through baking and painting.

The community of Burncourt, Cahir is renowned for its community spirit to include its care of and support for its older citizens. What is often uncelebrated (publicly) however is the contribution older citizens of the community make to the community events that litter the local social calendar. Whether for a funeral tea (offered to the families of all local citizens at their time of bereavement), the bi-annual Big Breakfast, the Holy Communion party, fundraisers, galas, or community parties there is a cohort of older men and women who on each occasion spend hours creating baked goods to be delivered to the local community hall.

This project is a celebration of their contribution to the community through knowledge sharing, a recapturing of life experiences and an occasion to acknowledge the creativity of those whose philosophies of baking are skills to be celebrated and preserved. Marking this celebration will include a recipe sharing morning, a watercolour painting workshop and a community baking classroom.

This initiative is open to the older citizens of Burncourt Community and children from Burncourt National School (5th& 6th class). Pls email breedafitzgerald@gmail.com to participate or for information.
