Caoin

Ceara Conway, a County Galway based renowned vocalist, performer and visual artist will  collaborate with a group of Ireland’s most exciting contemporary traditional Irish musicians to present CAOIN, a powerful song cycle of specific traditional songs and newly composed songs that explore the theme of the "cry and lament".

CAOIN, will explore the universal "cry" within a unique cross cultural body of traditional laments, lullabies, healing songs, love songs and political songs, distinctly situated within Irish contemporary music. The core element of the repertoire will include songs in the Irish sean nós style, as well as songs from Lebanon, Portugal, Georgia and Africa.

Throughout history (past and present) and across continents humans have utilised the expression, mood, tone and dynamics of the cry within song, as a way in which to express loss and longing in response to incidences of illness, death, deeply layered political and feminist perspectives and expressions of protest.
