Carrigeen Farmhouse Conservation

Carrigeen Farmhouse, near Five Alley, is cared for by the Hynes Egan family. It is a three roomed house with a loft over one room. It is exceptional and of national significance as the house and fixtures and fittings are in tact and in situ and the family connected with the house are very invested in its care.

This was highlighted by vernacular furniture expert, Claudia Kinmonth, in a report commissioned by Offaly County Council detailing the contents of the house. This report featured descriptions and recommendations for the contents of the house. The house is open to the public during Heritage Week and for groups by appointment. In 2019 they won the Heritage Hero award in National Heritage Week for their work to conserve and share the house, leading to a Nationwide feature in 2020.

Offaly County Council is keen to support the family to conserve and present this unique building and its fixtures and fittings and will work with them to conserve key features.
