Celebrating the Music of Michael Holohan
The composer and pianist Michael Holohan (b.1956) has resided in Drogheda since 1983. He has won numerous prizes as well as Arts Council awards to attend master classes, in the 1980s, with Messiaen, Boulez, Xenakis, Berio and Lachenmann in France His compositions have been performed and broadcast both at home and internationally.
Career highlights in Drogheda include Cromwell 1994 for the 'Drogheda 800' (RTE Concert Orchestra, Lourdes Church); No Sanctuary 1997 with Nobel Laureate and poet Seamus Heaney (Augustinian Church); Remembrance Sunday Service and Drogheda Unification 600 (RTETV live broadcast) in St Peter's Church of Ireland.
For the past number of years Michael has been researching old manuscripts and music collections that have historical connections relevant to Drogheda town and the Drogheda region from 1650 until 1900. His net has been cast widely and includes not alone Drogheda town but Co. Louth and Co. Meath.
The music collected will be recorded and an album will be produced with renowned musician Mick O'Brien. He is looking at also using Contempo St Qt and participants from the local music community including the Drogheda Mens Choir, Brass Band and Boyne Valley Chamber Orchestra. There will be over 150 locals participating and the project will culminate in a concert celebrating the music featuring all of the participants.
