Cessair – How I Came Here

SoloSIRENs and Writer/Director Jenny Macdonald will work on a large-scale participatory performance using the Irish myth of Cessair to highlight the experiences of diverse women living in South Dublin County.

In the myth, a woman is denied a place on her father’s ship in a time of floods. In response, she builds three boats of her own to journey to Ireland with 50 women and 3 men. Viewed via a contemporary lens the myth raises questions about climate change, migration, gender equality and women in leadership.

SoloSIRENs collective will work with Jenny to explore the story with community groups. They will form the core cast for the performance alongside new participants & professional artists who will come together to create a work in progress that will be presented to an invited community audience.

The process will inform the 2021 production at The Civic, Tallaght.

A performance of this scale, highlighting the stories of a predominantly community cast, will showcase the rich diversity of experiences of people living in South County Dublin.

Cessair – How I Came Here is a Tallaght Community Arts project in association with SoloSIRENs and The Civic, led by Creative Director Jenny Macdonald and Produced by Jennifer Webster.
