Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is a life-changing disability which creates challenges that limit cultural participation, and diminish agency/voice and access to creative health supports.

Funded for three years through dlr’s Creative Ireland Programme under the Creative Health & Wellbeing in the Community on a Shared Island Scheme, Crafting ABI-lity is a 3-year project that seeks to develop innovative inclusive cultural opportunities for people with ABI and their families; promote wellbeing, voice and agency through craft; enable cross border collaboration and strengthen partnerships. 

Key partners in the project are Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council (dlr), Acquired Brain Injury Ireland, Brain Injury Matters NI, artist Rachel Fitzpatrick, and the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Rehabilitative Training Unit.

The project will involve co-design, research and collaborative planning; regular creative labs/workshops in the North and South; two North/South exchanges; showcase events, public sharing and dissemination activity in 2028 in Dublin and Belfast.

A rigorous evaluation is planned, which will enable shared learning, visibility and embedding of the activity beyond the project scope.
