"Dear Diary" Digital Collection Project, Galway City Museum

The general public will be invited to contribute to an archival project entitled "Dear Diary" initiated by Galway City Museum, and designed to establish, record and digitally archive individual experiences of the current Covid -19 pandemic. Individuals will be asked to keep a Diary during the pandemic, recording the highs and lows of their experiences, their fears, strategies for coping, and Covid and non-Covid related activities they were part of during the duration of the pandemic. Did they make a face mask? Deliver groceries to people? Hold online music sessions, or learn to play a musical instrument? Begin to paint, knit, jog, bake for the first time?

The Museum would propose to upload anonymised extracts from these diaries on the designated web page on a regular basis. This will have the effect of validating the experiences of those who contribute and encouraging others to participate and make their own voices heard.

It would be the intention at the end of the process to organise a "Dear Diary" Pandemic workshop and exhibition. This would look not only at contributions to the project during the Covid - 19 pandemic, but set these in context by looking at diaries from the last major global health emergency, the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918-19.
