The Medieval Mile Museum, one of Ireland’s cultural heritage gems, is responding creatively to the challenges of the Covid 19 pandemic, with the support of the Kilkenny County Council Heritage Office. The aim of this exciting strategic project is to develop new opportunities for safe visitor experiences in the outdoor space of St. Mary’s graveyard.

St. Mary’s graveyard, within which the Medieval Mile Museum sits, dates back to the 13th century and contains one of the most important collection of renaissance memorials and headstones in Ireland, as well as being a calm green oasis in the city. This project comprises an inventory of headstones in the graveyard, an online searchable headstone database, the development of a new audio guide, new interpretive signage and the design of a new self-guided tour. It also includes an ecological survey to identify the flora, fauna and habitats in the graveyard, which will be used to inform a future landscape plan sensitive to both the cultural and natural heritage of this unique site.
