Dig Tralee! A Community Archaeology Project
Dig Tralee takes a ‘hands-on’ approach, where local people, working in partnership with the Archaeology Section in Kerry County Council and Kerry County Museum, literally dig into their area’s past and find a connection to those who lived in the same place thousands of years ago.
From 1st July to 2nd August 2024 the excavation of this ancient site at Knockanacuig hillfort will continue for a third year.
A filmmaker will document the participants’ journey through the dig, tracing their hopes and expectations, what they learned and what surprised them.
This project will bring people together in a community of interest through active involvement in the archaeological research, survey, and excavation of Knockanacuig Hillfort, Tralee. It provides an opportunity to find out more about Knockanacuig, to restate its prominence in the history of the town, and to connect people today with the town’s earliest inhabitants.
Through involvement in this project participants will explore issues of identity, community, culture, heritage, and citizenship. They will investigate their sense of place and discover what impact the relationship between people and place has for them.
