Digital Upskilling Programme

Michael Fortune from folklore.ie provided 2 programmes of digital upskilling workshops to Art Practitioners, Heritage Experts and Community Facilitators in County Waterford in September and October 2020. During the 7 session workshops he helped train and upskill people using online simple but effective digital tools to expand their practice and connect with fellow peers. The sessions were practical and hands on and coming from a practitioner who has cut a furrow in their area over the past 20 years. Since the late 1990s he has been using film and video to produce place-based work using simple, affordable, professional tools. There has always been a social remit in his work and he has built up a practice of working with communities of place and interest and using digital and social tools to offer reflection to them and their lives. During the course he openly shared his own skills and observations to the group and after the session finished he conducted a series of one-on-ones with people to tease out particular problems and assist them and their practice. For the past 10 years he has been delivering the Digital Media Module in the Education Department of Limerick School of Art and Design and since the beginning of Covid he has been working all over the country on up skilling programmes such as this. He was delighted to be able to work with practitioners in his neighbouring county and this was a great programme from everyone involved.
