Digitisation of the Archives of the Mayo Family Heritage Centres
The South Mayo Family Research Centre and the North Mayo Family Heritage Centre plan to digitize their extensive archives relating to family history and heritage in the county. They also propose to digitise images of relevant material in private custody in the community and create a searchable index of these images. The work will be carried out in adherence with Data Protection legislation.
Since their establishment in the 1980's, the genealogical research centres have built up substantial archives of correspondence, historical documents, newspaper cuttings, photographs, maps, certificates, facsimiles, family tree diagrams, group sheets, individual families histories relating to Mayo-born people and their descendants in Ireland and the Diaspora.
The centres have also identified in various locations in the community, documents, inscriptions and manuscripts including registers, rentals, roll books, wills, memorials, settlements and miscellaneous legal papers, ledgers, business accounts, gravestone inscriptions and the like which contain important genealogical and social history information.
This proposal will lead to the creation of a searchable digital archive for each of the two centres.
