Disert Heritage Project

Disert is a ritual pilgrim landscape in the parish of Inver, Co. Donegal that includes a series of early ecclesiastical enclosures, penitential cairns, a holy well dedicated to St Colmcille, a post-medieval altar and a cillín (children’s graveyard). It may date to the sixth century AD when it was reputedly founded by St Colmcille, but evidence from excavation in 2019 and 2021 suggests that use of the site extends back into prehistory.

Following on from this earlier work, another excavation is planned for the summer of 2022 during which community volunteers and Irish and US-based archaeology students will work together to investigate the nature and origin of the archaeological remains at Disert, and to place them in their wider cultural and landscape context. A further aim is to enable the provision of safety/conservation measures at the holy well.

The focus will be on understanding the dating and origin of the site as well as the nature of key features identified by fieldwork, drone survey and geophysics.
There will be a series of outreach and cultural events to foster community and student engagement with the culture and heritage of Disert and the wider region.
