Dr. Yvonne Leuven discusses, Customs House Historian Irish Workhouses and the Great Famine
As Part of the Feile Lachtain 2024 we invite you to join Dr. Yvonne Leuven, Customs House Historian
Irish Workhouses and the Great Famine where she will discuss the the Great Famine and give us an insight into the daily life in Irish workhouses, which was far from idyllic. Residents endured a strict routine marked by exhausting work, minimal food rations, and deplorable hygiene. Children, who comprised a significant portion of the workhouse population, faced particularly harsh conditions. Many entered the workhouses due to family crises, including eviction from farms or parental emigration. Orphans, abandoned children, and illegitimate offspring also sought refuge there. Unfortunately, inadequate diets, disease, and high mortality rates plagued these young inmates.
