Duncannon Harbour Walls

Artist Kate Murphy in collaboration with the Duncannon harbour workers, the Tidy Village Group, and the Duncannon Village Renewal group plan to revive local stories through images. In creating a few images at various points around the harbour walls visitors can ‘discover’ the history of the lives of previous residents as they walk around the location. Each of the images will represent some facet of fishing life and/or seaside activities in the area.

Kate will curate stories from the local-residents and members of the fishing community which they will then turn into images. Together they will create the stencils in a series of workshops held at the community centre. These stencils will be brought to the harbour and in small team’s the participants will be assisted to paint the images.

Accompanying the murals will be one or more interpretive panels offering visitors an insight into the rich history of the village and its fishing community. With the changes in the Fishing Industry and the loss of livelihoods across the sector, this project will restore pride and offer recognition to those who played important parts in this area of cultural life.
