In 2000 the late Rita Nolan wrote:
156 years ago a stranger from Yorkshire came to Erris. His name was James Hack Tuke and he was a Quaker. He did not come, as most visitors do today, to enjoy our salubrious air, our beautiful beaches or magnificent scenery; he came with a mission. Rumours of terrible events had reached him and his friends…They found horrors beyond their wildest imaginings.
It was Rita’s earnest hope that Tuke would be remembered and commemorated in Erris for all he had done to help its people.
