Exploring Ardfert Cathedral's Architectural Feature with ARTlab Tralee
Exploring Ardfert Cathedral’s Architectural Features with ARTlab Tralee is a creative learning project for sixth‑class pupils that combines heritage, art, and hands‑on making. The project invites young participants to explore the medieval architecture of Ardfert Cathedral and respond creatively to its unique historic features.
Students will begin with a short introduction to the history of Ardfert Cathedral, learning about its origins, architectural development, and distinctive features. This will be followed by a guided site visit, where students will observe, sketch, and discuss elements such as the cathedral windows, stone carvings, lancet arches, and decorative details.
Working closely with a professional artist from ARTlab Tralee, students will transform their drawings into relief papier‑mâché sculptures inspired by what they have observed. The workshops are designed to be interactive and hands‑on, encouraging creativity, exploration, and individual expression while developing observation and making skills.
The project will culminate in a public exhibition of the students’ work, giving families and the wider community an opportunity to engage with the artworks and celebrate young people’s creative responses to local heritage. The initiative supports creative learning, fosters pride of place, and helps young people build meaningful connections with Ardfert’s architectural history.
