Festival of Colour
The ongoing focus of this collaborative project is to use the catalyst of a community focused event, in this case a family 5k, to introduce the community to a broad range of different cultural influences and experiences. In doing so, we hope this project will instil a sense of wonder and creativity in our community to explore further their own cultural background and that of the community around them through the cultural services of the county council.
For this year, we intend to focus on the Indian Festival of Colour; Holi. Holi is a Hindu festival, originating from the Indian subcontinent but has spread across the world in various forms and is the inspiration for the colour run experience.
We plan to celebrate and increase awareness of Indian culture and the origin of the Festival of Colour with the community in Monaghan through a family fun colour run. On the day we would have opportunities for sampling of Indian cuisine, facilitators offering body art and henna tattoos to children and young people as well as the opportunity to explore the cultural significance of this body art tradition. The event will culminate in a colourful and energetic performance of Indian dance and music, a style that become known as Bollywood Dance.
This is a collaborative project between the Monaghan Cultural Team and Comhairle na nÓg.
