Forged in Fire: Ballinasloe’s history of iron and metalworker
Ballinasloe, a town with a rich heritage and vibrant community life, has long been a site where history and culture interweave. One of the lesser-known tales of Ballinasloe is its historical relationship with iron and metalwork – a craft that has shaped its architectural and cultural landscape.
The project, aims to uncover, document, and celebrate this aspect of the town’s history through a comprehensive citizen science project. The project will seek to document the rich tradition of iron and metalwork in Ballinasloe, from blacksmiths and forges to the railings around various properties, ironwork in the graveyards, churches, coinage, house and business implements etc.
