Castleblayney in County Monaghan was selected as one of the ten study towns for the Free Market Irish Pavillion at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2018. It was included in the Venice Exhibition running May – November 2018, with drone photos, videos, historic images, drawings and a large scale model of Castleblayney exhibited in Venice. This material highlighted the historic town centre and  the Market House and show the potential for the future of the town centre. 

The exhibition in Venice attracted over 260,000 visitors, with Castleblayney being prominently displayed and discussed on the international stage. The Venice Biennale is the foremost global showcase for Architecture.

The exhibition has returned to Ireland and will travel to Castleblayney in July 2019, where it will be exhibited in the town centre, in conjunction with the Muckno Mania festival weekend and will include a number of events taking place including a public lecture and debate on Castleblayney’s future, launch of exhibition with local and national media coverage, walking tours. The exhibition will be part of the national tour of towns which will close with a symposium on the future of Ireland’s market towns in late 2019.

The Free Market exhibition in Castleblayney will mean a world-class architecture exhibition will be directly accessible to the people of Monaghan.
