From Closh to the Forge, yesterday, today and tomorrow on the Tullow Road
2026 will see a new era on the Tullow Road with the opening of a new community centre which will provide a meeting place and hub for the vastly growing population of the area. The Forge Hen Shed which is nestled in the heart of this community wishes to undertake a community mapping exercise with various individuals and community groups in the area. These mapping exercises which will look at the evolution of the Tullow Road, will be facilitated by shed members through a series of community consultations using paticipatory methodologies to develop three basic maps of the area. Map 1 will be retrospective, depicting the Tullow Road 70-100years ago, Map 2 will depict the area currently and Map 3 will be prospective map highlighting dreams of the youth of the area for 2076. These maps shall then be taken back to the Hen Shed and under the guidance of a local textile artist, the women in the Shed shall convert the maps in three art pieces or wall hangings using a variety of techniques including Appliqué, patchwork, embroidery, crochet, felting etc, which with the agreement of Carlow County Council will serve ultimately be housed in the new community centre as a beautiful art installation, a piece of social history and a talking point for the community of the area. The area covered by these maps will be from the Closh Pump out to the Walls Forge.
